The August 9 election will be one of the country's most competitive polls, with political parties moving in earnest to institute reforms geared at strengthening them and subsequently bagging many elective seats.

A majority of political parties that fielded candidates in the 2017 elections have since undergone a total overhaul, with others making a few changes in both leadership and membership. Following the changes made to the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties allows aspirants who lost in the party primaries a 10-day window to submit their applications to run as independents.

So far, the Azimio La Umoja faction has endorsed the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, as its presidential candidate while Kenya Kwanza has settled on United Democratic Alliance's (UDA) Deputy President, William Samoei Ruto.

President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party suffered a major blow after the DP walked out and formed the United Democratic Alliance, a party that has since carried a huge number of supporters from the Head of State's ruling party.

The new political formations and coalitions are slowly shaping the election with some sharp divisions being experienced in some regions, with Mount Kenya being the most affected.

Despite the wave of change and the movements in political parties, re-alignments and changes, some seasoned politicians from Mount Kenya have made it clear that they will support the Azimio la Umoja and ride on it as a coalition.

Sabina Chege

The current Murang'a Woman Representative is one of the fiercest defenders of President Uhuru Kenyatta. Chege, who is seeking to defend her seat, will be contesting on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Jubilee is one of the affiliate parties forming the Azimio La Umoja.

Chege has been at the forefront of defending the Azimio La Umoja coalition and campaigning for Raila Odinga, going to the extent of making wild claims that they rigged the votes in favor of President Kenyatta in 2017.

Ngunjiri Wambugu

He is the current Member of Parliament for Nyeri Town.

He will also be defending his seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, and campaign for Raila Odinga.

Before joining the President's party, Wambugu was a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Lee Kinyanjui

The current governor for Nakuru County will be defending his seat on a Jubilee Party ticket. He will face off with Kenya Kwanza's Susan Kihika, who is seen as the favorite in the race.

Kinyanjui is also a leading campaigner for Raila Odinga in the Rift Valley region.

Amos Kimunya

The Kipipiri Member of Parliament is also the National Assembly's Majority Leader.

A close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, he will be seeking re-election on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Kanini Kega

He is the Member of Parliament for Kieni and will be seeking to retain his position.

He will also be running on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Governor Ndiritu Muriithi

The current Laikipia Governor was elected on an independent ticket.

He is, however, allied to the Jubilee Party. He will also be seeking re-election on a Party of National Unity (PNU) party ticket.

"I am a child of Mau Mau. If you want to compete with me, step forward. Let us compete democratically and I will win," said Ndiritu.

Kiraitu Murungi

The Meru governor has joined the Azimio La Umoja movement under his Devolution Empowerment Party.

He will also be seeking re-election.
