Kenyans living in rural areas are set to enjoy electric car services after various companies announced expansion plans across the country.
While addressing the media on Tuesday, April 19, Bolt's Regional Manager, Micah Kenneth, revealed plans to expand their green car electric services across the 47 counties.
He noted that their electric car services were only limited to Nairobi given the few charging stations based in the capital.
"The bolt green category was launched a year ago and we have done over one million rides and this is only available in Nairobi. we are looking to scale this green scale mobility among the counties," he noted.
On his part, Zino Motors Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Michael Spencer, added that the plans would help mitigate challenges that have faced Kenyan motorists such as the acute fuel shortage that was experienced across the country in the last few weeks.
"On a kilometer basis, as you compare the fuel prices in Kenya, you will save about 80 per cent. The driver and the passengers at the back will also get a better experience," he noted.
However, other stakeholders asked the government to improve legislative frameworks and invest in the sector as the move also benefits the government's environmental policies.
"The benefit is that there will be cleaner emissions there will be no carbon emissions and we want more people to embrace electric vehicles. We believe that the future is electric," Bertha Mvati, Vaelle Leasing company Managing Director stated.
For the past year electric vehicle services have increased in the country with various companies investing in transport business.
On March 9, BasiGo announced new routes for their newly-acquired bus services plying Mombasa Road and part of Jogoo Road.
"The buses shall now go into operation as standard PSVs with Citi Hoppa and East Shuttle. Citi Hoppa will be deploying the BasiGo electric bus on routes between the city center and JKIA.
"East Shuttle plans to deploy their electric bus on the Eastlands side of Nairobi. The electric bus pilot program will give passengers along these routes the chance to ride in the electric bus just like any other matatu," the company stated then
