  • Azimio One Kenya flag-bearer Raila Odinga on Sunday, May 15, launched a fresh attack on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Speaking at the Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi, Raila, who likened the upcoming August 9 General Elections to a football match, accused Chebukati of being an unfair referee.

He added that the IEBC chair, who was working with a linesman, had already awarded their opponents an illegal penalty.  The presidential hopeful told the 'referee' that he would be keeping an eye on him.

"I have seen the referee, Chebukati has come there with his linesman, but we in Azimio have an issue with them because he is awarding unfair penalties. We need to monitor him closely," Odinga stated.

Raila, the captain of the Azimio team, noted that his team was ready to square it out with Kenya Kwanza.

The ODM leader boasts of leading a camp with seasoned politicians, including Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, governors Charity Ngilu, Kivutha Kibwana and Ali Hassan Joho, Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, and agriculture cabinet secretary Peter Munya.

The former Premier further reckoned that the Ruto-led alliance was playing an away match in Nairobi, promising to hand them a resounding defeat in August.

"The young man whom you sing about was a Nyayo handyman. We will teach him a lesson, better than that we handed to Nyayo such that he will go home and never return.

"He has no manners, calling me a dynasty. When I spent years in detention he was still beast feeding and here in Nairobi, we will show him that a village chick does not crow in the city," he added.

His accusations come a week after IEBC turned down the list of aspirants submitted by ODM over failure to adhere to the two-thirds gender rule. Chebukati added that ODM alongside, UDA and Jubilee risked disqualification from the poll.

However, the High Court on May 12, issued a temporary injunction on the directive by the electoral commission following a petition filed by lawyer Adrian Kamotho, who challenged the directive on grounds that it was unfair.

Raila is set to announce his running mate on Monday, May 16, and the duo will face off with Deputy President William Ruto and his running mate Rigathi Gachagua.
