The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has named eight notorious nightclubs and other entertainment joints that were targeted by Samuel Mugoh Muvota, who was gunned down along Mirema Drive in Kasarani area.
In a statement released on Thursday night, May 19, DCI listed club Switch in Kasarani, Whisky River along Kiambu road, Red Lion in Ruaka, Oklahoma Choma Zone, Lacascada, Aroma, Backroom, Mkwanju, and Dragon, as the playground for drinks spikers.
According to preliminary reports by detectives probing the killing, the man who was gunned down along Mirema Drive also targeted all the clubs located along Kamiti Road, Roysambu, 44 and Zimmerman.
To execute the scheme, Muvota recruited 50 women whom he briefed on their assignments. They would order expensive drinks and convince male patrons in the clubs that they were just normal revelers.
To sustain their lifestyles, the recruited women would forward their bills to the slain businessman, who would then clear from his base of operation in Roysambu or Githurai 44.
Muvota further ensured that the women lived either in Kiambu's Kamiti Corner or in Kahawa Wendani where he would visit them to collect stolen phones, identity cards and ATM cards.
The slain businessman would then pay them depending on the amount collected while spiking revelers' drinks.
"The women would then be paid handsomely, depending on how one had been industrious in a given night," DCI stated.
To remain anonymous, the businessman had allegedly acquired numerous sim cards and operated over 300 bank accounts. To obtain the sim cards, he paid university students and jobseekers to register them on his behalf.
Muvota was also surprisingly married to seven women who did not know each other and who did not know what he did for a living.
DCI stated that Muvota was arrested over 30 times in the past 11 years on fraud-related charges and had been in and out of almost all courts in Nairobi and the neighbouring Kiambu county.
Detectives further stated the slain man was widely known by cyber security specialists in the banking sector for the many times he fraudulently accessed clients’ accounts through various ATM machines, sweeping the accounts clean.
"In 2018, at an ATM in Kayole, he transferred Ksh700,000 in a single transaction from an account of a woman he was assisting through Pesalink to one of his fraudulent accounts, leaving a balance of only Ksh700," the DCI stated.
