At least six people have succumbed to injuries they sustained in a road crash along Thika - Garissa Highway.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, June 7, involving a head-on collision between a bus and a personal car in Molomu area between Kanyonyo market and Kivandini market

Four people are reported to be still trapped in the personal car. Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed a damaged front of the bus while the car, a white saloon, was completely destroyed.

The 12 were mostly close relatives who had traveled for a dowry payment ceremony known as Ruracio.

On Monday, just a few metres from the scene of the Saturday accident, two people died in a fresh accident which left several others injured.

In just a span of three days, a total of 20 lives have been lost through road crashes along the Thika-Garissa Highway raising eyebrows.

Survivors of the Saturday night, June 4, crash noted that the matatu's driver was at fault for driving under the influence.

The survivor explained that the vehicle was overloaded since it had 21 occupants although it is designed to accommodate a maximum of 14 passengers.

That expands the death toll from road accidents in the country, as per data provided by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which shows that 1,345 people had lost their lives in road accidents from January 1, 2022, to April 11, 2022.

That represents a 15 per cent increase compared to 1,168 fatalities recorded over a similar period during the previous year.

NTSA has in recent months been running a sensitisation campaign urging road users to adhere to traffic laws to avoid future accidents.
