Three officers who had accompanied Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) boss, George Kinoti, to Archbishop Antony Muheria's home, received a surprise from President Uhuru Kenyatta who promoted them.
In a statement by the DCI dated Friday, June 25, the officers had gone to Muheria's home to surprise him on his birthday.
Uhuru's decision to promote the three officers was communicated to them through Kinoti during the prayer session that was being led by Muheria.
Further, it was divulged that the surprise announcement was organised by Kinoti who had received the news of the officers' promotion from the Head of State.
"When the Director of the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, Paul Mumo, the Deputy Director of Forensics, Margaret Karanja, and Central Regional Police boss, Manasseh Musyoka, accompanied the DCI boss, George Kinoti, to visit Nyeri Archbishop, His Grace Anthony Muheria, they did not know that the good news of their promotions was nigh.
"It was after the brief cake-cutting celebration and prayer that news of the elevation of the three from Commissioners of police to Assistant Inspector General, filtered into the room," read the statement in part.
DCI noted that the promotion of the officers was based on their performance in solving crime given the various departments they were heading at the headquarters.
"Mumo is credited with responding to incidents of crime expeditiously and putting criminals where they belong," stated the DCI.
On their part, the officers thanked the President for the surprise as they were not expecting what would come their way following the kind gesture to the Catholic clergyman.
"The officers who couldn’t hide their joy celebrated and thanked God for their elevation, as the DG also thanked the Commander-in-Chief for recognizing the officers’ efforts in fighting crime and rewarding them with promotions."
Also in the company of the officers was Nairobi governor, Anne Kananu among other DCI officers.
The promotions came days after Uhuru launched the new DCI forensic lab last week.
