Most people hear or read about the President's bodyguard and automatically think about the man in suit guarding the Head of State. This is far from the reality.

President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Kenya Navy Lieutenant Colonel, Timothy Stelu Lekolool, as his Aide-de-Camp (ADC) in 2018.

Lt Col Stelu is the usual man in a white garment and always stands and walks behind the Head of State. He was appointed bodyguard on July 17, 2018.

He is a family man and Kenya Navy soldier who made history to become first Navy officer to be appointed as an ADC in the country.

Stelu is the son of the late Principal Commissioner, Francis Lekolool.

He was appointed right after his predecessor, Victor Mburu, left the job to further his studies on matters National security.

Stelu is Uhuru's third bodyguard since he ascended to power in 2013.

Some of the key roles performed by Stelu away from the obvious perceived standing behind the President and opening doors when the Head of State travels include detail leader, assistant detail leader, tactical commander, motorcade lead, advance lead, mobile agent, static agent and protective intelligence agent.

Colonel Stelu's Predecessor

In 1978 when the late President Daniel Moi assumed office, he carried over Brigadier Samuel Macharia from the country's founding president, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Major Ngugi Ikenye replaced Macharia who was succeeded by Col (Rtd) Wilson Boinett before the latter was moved to head National Security and Intelligence Service (NIS) leaving his position to Col (Rtd) Alexander Sitienei then Lt Col (Rtd) Jonathan Rono and Col (Rtd) Stephen Boiywo respectively.

Kibaki’s first Aide-de-camp was Lt Col (Rtd) Josiah Mrashui who was succeeded by Lt Col (Rtd) Godfrey King’angi then Njiru who was inherited by Uhuru.
