Over the last couple of months, Prof Makau Mutua has played a critical role in upending the election of presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, as the spokesperson of his presidential campaign secretariat.
Unbeknownst to many, however, is the many hats that the Professor of Law has worn over the years, including his prowess in creating the best hotel in Kitui that hosts high-ranking government officials.
Launched in 2018 by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the hotel, christened Kitui Villa, boasts an expansive 11-room facility offering a tranquil array of services that provides an escape from the dusty environs surrounding Kitui county.
The hotel has a big swimming pool, hidden gardens, water fountains, a gym, jacuzzi, library, as well as a business center.
Initially, Mutua and his wife, Athena Harris, intended to retain their home on the expansive parcel of land but opted to convert it into the villa.
The hallways and rooms are all named after heroes and heroines including Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Malcom X, Amilcar Cabral, Mekatilili wa Menza and Dedan Kimathi among others.
Mutua also sought to honour his late brother, Musyoka, who played a fundamental role as a contractor during the hotel's construction. He has a walkway named after him.
Musyoka was the main contractor immediately the construction works began in 2014 but unfortunately, he could not see the finished facility since he passed away two years later.
Pius, another one of the brothers, served as the accountant with many more family members picking up other roles as the project came to life.
The contractor incorporated exotic construction materials such as gray stone that lines the walls as well as mazeras on the walkways.
Raila was accompanied for the launch by Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Kitui governor, Charity Ngilu.
“The opening of the KV by Odinga in presence of Mr Musyoka, Governor Ngilu and most of the political class in the region gave everyone an opportunity to renew and reaffirm our common commitment to a democratic Kenya and strengthen our bonds.
“At a personal level, I felt humbled and privileged to be so honored. It’s the stuff of dreams. I only wish my parents were alive to witness it,” Mutua stated during the launch.
The villa has continued to attract descend traffic and charges about Ksh14,000 per night according to TripAdvisor.
