The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that it will close a section of Uhuru Highway for two days.

In a statement dated Friday, July 29, KeNHA alerted motorists that there will be a temporary traffic diversion on Uhuru Highway from the Haile Selassie roundabout to Kenyatta Avenue roundabout.

The authority noted that the busy road will be closed from 9.00pm to 6.00am between July 28 and July 31.

The closure will allow road works to take place safely outside off-peak traffic hours.

KeNHA further stated that motorists heading towards Westlands will have to use the opposite side of the road and share the carriageway with those heading towards Mombasa Road.

Further, KeNHA stated that traffic marshals will be present to guide motorists. Temporary road signs will also be erected to alert the road users of diversions and other changes.

Motorists were advised to follow the diversion provided by KeNHA on its social media platforms and use alternative routes whenever possible.

"Traffic heading towards Westlands will be diverted to the opposite side of the road and share the carriageway with traffic heading towards Mombasa Road," KeNHA Director General, Kung'u Ndung'u, stated.

The renovation of Uhuru Highway comes amid a report contested by Senators after learning that the taxpayer will fork out Ksh9 billion to repair Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.

Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, announced that the contractor will get the Ksh9 billion for the rehabilitation and improvement of the roads after they were destroyed during the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

Senators demanded that the contractor of the Expressway - China Road and Bridge Construction Company - bear the cost of rehabilitating the roads.

They argued that the contractor was responsible for damages on the old Mombasa Road and that the government should ensure they take full responsibility.

According to the lawmakers, shifting the cost of rebuilding the road to Kenyans was a waste of public funds given that the contractor was already paid for constructing the Expressway.
