Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has joined Kenya Kwanza.

The move was announced on Saturday, July 30, by Deputy President William Ruto, who shared photos of the two at the meeting.

Sonko held a private meeting with DP Ruto at his Karen residence.

It is not yet clear whether Sonko has decamped from Wiper and which Party he will be fronting under Kenya Kwanza.

Sonko had hinted at supporting UDA's Mombasa gubernatorial candidate, Hassan Omar, if not allowed to run for office.

“We are both focused to dethrone Governor Hassan Joho and the corruption that is besieging this county to ensure Mombasa gets the development it deserves,” Omar responded, arguing that his rival, ODM's Abdulswamad Nassir is a state project.

During the interview, Sonko stated that he was opposed to IEBC declining to clear Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo to vie for the gubernatorial seat noting he was never impeached.

"I was cleared alongside my Deputy Governor Ali Mbogo. The impeachment was for Sonko not for Mbogo. We are pleading with IEBC and the government to clear Ali Mbogo to vie as governor," said Sonko in an interview on TV47 on Thursday, July 28.

The High Court on the same day ruled to dismiss his that sought to compel the IEBC to include his name among the candidates who will contest for Mombasa gubernatorial seat.

In the documents presented before the court, Sonko argued that he still has an active appeal case, surrounding his impeachment, at the East Africa Court of Justice.

However, the three-judge High Court bench upheld a Supreme Court ruling that found his impeachment was constitutional.

Sonko's move to Arusha mirrors a 2018 case when Azimio La Umoja's presidential running mate, Martha Karua, lost to incumbent Kirinyaga governor, Anne Mumbi Waiguru, over alleged irregularities in the 2017 General Election.

The court ruled in Karua's favour and awarded him Ksh2.7 million as damages for infringement of her right to a fair trial.
