Four people died on Thursday, August 4, after a car ferrying Lunga Lunga Member of Parliament, Khatib Mwashetani's aides was involved in an accident

Preliminary reports indicated that the driver lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst as he was speeding along Likoni - Lunga Lunga road.

The four victims who passed on were members of Mwashetani's campaign team and were on their way to popularise his candidature.

One person survived the ordeal and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Lunga Lunga OCPD Peter Nzimbi stated that they had begun investigations into the accident adding that they would provide more details after completing the exercise.

“They were coming from Kanana heading to Lungalunga when the vehicle got a tyre burst and rolled. Preliminary investigations show the vehicle could have been at a high speed,” he stated.

He added that the Prado rolled several times after veering off from the road.

The police boss confirmed that the UDA politician was not part of the entourage with reports indicating that Mwashetani was in Tononoka grounds in Mombasa County for Ruto's rally.

Further, Nzimbi cautioned motorists, especially those involved in campaigns to adhere to traffic rules despite trying to beat the campaign timelines ahead of the August 9 polls.

"I would tell them to avoid speeding and be keen while using the road," he stated.

In June, government spokesperson Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna released guidelines on the use of campaign cars after it was noted that accidents on major highways in the country had risen following increased campaign activities.

"In the last few weeks, cases of road crashes, most of which have led to unnecessary loss of innocent lives, have been on the rise.

It is noted with great concern that motorists and boda boda riders are exhibiting high levels of lawlessness, with total disregard for safety measures, particularly, while on the campaign trails, thus endangering not only their lives but also that of other road users," read the statement in part.
