Kenya's former first lady, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, underscored the importance of participating in the democratic process of electing leaders after casting her vote at Mutomo Primary School polling station in Ichaweri, Gatundu South constituency in Kiambu county.

Addressing the media after voting on Tuesday, August 9, Mama Ngina, President Uhuru Kenyatta's mother, reiterated the importance of voting, arguing that it grants Kenyans an equal playing ground in determining the country's leadership.

Without revealing her preferred candidate, the former first lady maintained that voting is the only way to fix the country's leadership.

"It is important for everyone to understand the importance of voting," Mama Ngina advised.

"When every legitimate voter takes part in the voting process, we vest powers to the right people to lead this country."

In March, Mama Ngina urged Mt Kenya residents to follow Uhuru's political direction, adding that her son could not mislead the people.

She further called out political leaders hurling insults at the Head of State and other elected leaders, saying such actions only served to divide Kenyans.

"Depending on how someone was brought up, when he or she is out in public, he or she should not insult another person. But listen at how those people are insulting others.

"We will leave them alone if insulting others is what they were taught when growing up," she added.

Her advice follows a bitter fallout between Uhuru and Deputy President William Ruto. The Head of State accused his deputy of absconding duties while endorsing Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga as his preferred successor.

While casting his vote at Mutomo Primary School in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, Uhuru called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and vote for the next government as his term lapses.
