Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader, Musalia Mudavadi, failed to deliver 70 per cent of the votes to Deputy President William Ruto from his Vihiga County as agreed in the deed of agreement signed by the Kenya Kwanza principals.
According to the vote tally from Vihiga County, Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, garnered 143,371 votes, while the Kenya Kwanza candidate got 79,722 votes.
Mudavadi, one of Kenya Kwanza's principals, delivered 35 per cent of Vihiga's total votes.
According to the Kenya Kwanza agreement, Mudavadi was expected to deliver 70 per cent of Western region votes to be appointed a Chief Cabinet Secretary if Ruto beats Raila in the presidential poll.
Mudavadi was tasked together with Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula to help Ruto win the majority of votes in the former Western Kenya province.
Raila's dominance comes just after the ANC candidate for Sabatia parliamentary race lost to his United Democratic Alliance's (UDA) competitor.
Clement Sloya – who only joined the campaign following the death of his elder brother, Macleans Sloya – was leading in the constituency by the time of going to press. He was followed by Emmanuel Ayodi.
Mudavadi previously served as the Sabatia Member of Parliament previously.
Results from the constituency tallying centre at Moi Girls High School Vokoli indicated that Sloya led with 15,106 votes against Ayodi’s 7,402 in 75 out of the 138 polling stations.
The win would dent Mudavadi's political prospects, especially in commanding the Western region.
During campaigns, Mudavadi and his allies hit out at Ruto for being insincere by fielding a candidate in his turf.
"I have a deal with Ruto, but that is only for the top positions. When you go to Sugoi, his backyard, the candidates likely to be elected are from UDA. So why should they deny me a chance to elect ANC candidates here?" Mudavadi posed.
