UPDATE: 5:50 pm: Deputy President William Ruto made his way back to the Bomas of Kenya minutes after being whisked away by Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) after chaos broke out at the National Tallying Centre.
Ruto was accompanied by his running mate in the presidential election, Rigathi Gachagua.
Deputy President William Ruto, his mother and other VIPs were hurriedly evacuated from the Bomas of Kenya after chaos erupted at the National Tallying Centre.
The chaos started immediately after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, arrived at the venue to announce the results of the just concluded presidential election.
Ruto, who had arrived at the Bomas of Kenya, was whisked away by members of the elite Presidential Escort Unit (PUE) and police officers who were deployed to maintain security at the venue.
His mother, who had accompanied him and his extended family, was seen being escorted to safety by members of the General Service Unit (GSU).
The chaotic scenes ensued shortly after Chebukati arrived at the Bomas of Kenya to announce the results, despite four other commissioners disputing the results.
At Bomas, the anti-riot police officers swung into action and shielded the IEBC chair from devices and gadgets being thrown at him.
Minutes after police officers restored order, both the outgoing DP and Chebukati returned to Bomas of Kenya and sat side by side.
While announcing the results, Chebukati noted that two of his commissioners were injured, others arrested and some of the officials went missing.
"We have a duty to perform, and that's why I stand here without fear of insults or harassment. I took my oath to serve Kenyans, and this of course will be my last election so, to the incoming commissioners, we're prepared for you," he stated.
He announced Ruto as the president-elect of Kenya, garnering 7, 176,141 ( 50.49 per cent), followed by Raila's 6,942930 (48.85 per cent), George Wajackoyah's 61,969 and Waihiga Mwaure's 31,987.
