Outgoing Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa can heave a sigh of relief after Mombasa High Court withdrew a warrant of arrest against her.

Jumwa failed to attend a court session last week claiming that she was admitted at a hospital.

The lawmaker, however, appeared in court virtually on Tuesday, August 23 through which her lawyer, Shadrack Wambui pleaded with Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku to lift the warrant of arrest.

“With her attendance in court, we pray that you lift the warrant of arrest against the first accused person Ms Jumwa,” Wambui stated.

Chief Magistrate Mutuku directed the former legislator to present her medical records to court and prosecutors.

The case will be mentioned on September 2, 2022.

The former MP is facing graft charges involving the payment of Ksh19 million to Multiserve Contractors in respect to tender number MLD/NG-CDF/01/2017/2018 of the National Government Malindi Constituency Development Fund.

Out of the Ksh19 million, Multserve Contractors Limited received Ksh2.5 million which was allegedly transferred to Jumwa which resulted in a conflict of interest.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had told the court that the politician concealed the cash, being proceeds of crime, by depositing an installment towards the purchase of an apartment located on Argwings Kodhek Road in Nairobi.

According to the DPP, the corruption offences were allegedly committed between May 14 and October 12, 2018 in Malindi sub-county, Kilifi County.

She vied for Kilifi gubernatorial seat on UDA ticket but lost to ODM's Gideon Mung'aro who garnered 143,773 votes against Jumwa's 68,893.

The vocal politician was part of the team that propelled UDA party's popularity in the coastal region on which William Ruto ran for president and emerged winner in the August 9 poll.
