Exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna is yet to receive a confirmation that the barriers to his return have been lifted.

Miguna through a statement on Wednesday, September 14, stated that the red alerts imposed against him in the reign of former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration are still active and hence he cannot return to Kenya.

The statement was prompted by inquisitive Kenyans who sought to know when the vocal lawyer would return to Kenya. Miguna has since promised to issue updates on the progress.

“Fellow Kenyans, please go easy on your trolling habits. To answer your incessant questions, I have not received confirmation that President William Ruto has lifted the red alerts Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga imposed against me. I'll update you if I do,” he stated.

The statement is inconsistent with the one made by the lawyer on Tuesday, September 13 after the swearing-in of President William Ruto. On Tuesday, Miguna affirmed that President William Ruto had assured him that the red alerts would be lifted to expedite his return.

"I'm happy to announce that President William Ruto has assured me that the red alerts will be lifted on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

"Thereafter, I will have my Kenyan Passport renewed and I'll announce the date of my return to my motherland. Bravo!"

Miguna has barely touched the soil of Kenya, a country he calls his motherland, since 2018 when he was deported to Canada. His deportation followed a mock swearing-in of Raila Odinga on January 30, 2018.

State agencies alleged that Miguna denounced his Kenyan citizenship before acquiring Canadian citizenship and thus was illegally in the country. His attempts to make a comeback have ended in futility amid his complaints faulting the Uhuru Kenyatta administration for violation of his rights.

During the campaign period, Miguna drummed up support for President Ruto and expressed hopes that his administration would help him find a way back to his motherland.

In the week before Ruto's swearing-in, Miguna had authored a letter to the assumption of office committee demanding prompt action to facilitate his return. The president is, however, yet to issue a statement regarding his return.
