The late Kevin Otieno, who was sprayed with 36 bullets in broad daylight by armed men in Nairobi's Utawala, had survived an attempt on his life two months before the incident.
A senior detective with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intimated to the media that Otieno's brother, Alfred Odhiambo, was using his car, a Toyota Premio when he was accosted by armed men.
The attackers, who lay waiting in Mwiki, Kasarani sub-county, sprayed the car with bullets thinking that it was Otieno. His brother, however, survived the incident and the car was towed to the Kasarani Police Station.
“Those who sprayed the vehicle with the bullets believed that it was Otieno who was driving it and not his brother,” the detective told Nation.
According to the detective, the attackers were hell-bent on carrying out their mission as portrayed by their second attempt which they ultimately nabbed him on Friday, September 23.
Kenyans raised concerns about Otieno's shooting incident, which occurred in broad daylight.
Witnesses at the scene intimated that the gunmen blocked Otieno's car in Mihang'o, Utawala, before opening fire.
"He had tried to run away but they shot at him, hit him on his shoulder and he fell with a thud. The gunmen then rushed to where he was lying and went on spraying bullets on him,” a witness stated.
His close friends expressed dismay upon learning of his demise. They recalled the deceased's generous nature, claiming that he would even pay Ksh1,000 for a Ksh50 motorbike ride and offer the balance as a tip.
Otieno's family has been on a rallying call urging police officers to expedite their investigations in a bid to establish the motive behind their kin's murder.
In addition, his brother - Odhiambo - who was abducted by the perpetrators was found by police on Thursday, September 29, in Thika town.
While addressing the media, he claimed that he had been locked up in a house and had not interacted with anyone for nearly seven days.
