Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o inked a deal worth Ksh30 billion with a UK company on Tuesday, October 4.

In a statement, the Kisumu county government noted that the deal with the UK company United Green Investment was key to revitalising food production and agriculture in the Lake region.

The Ksh30 billion partnership will also see the revival of fish production, cotton and dairy in the region.

While signing the deal, Nyong'o noted that the partnership with United Green was essential for providing new markets for farmers in the rural areas in the region through the introduction of agri-fintech services.

"The High productivity climate-smart farming and state-of-the-art agro-industrial facilities will create new markets for farmers in the Lake Victoria Basin Region over the next five years," Nyong'o stated.

The second-term governor added that the deal was key to reducing the county's trade deficit by Ksh24 billion and further reduce the over-reliance on imported goods.

On the other hand, United Green Investment officer Albrecht Frischenschlager noted that the new partnership with Kisumu county was key to helping farmers access modern services and increase agricultural output.

"We are proud to have found such committed foundation partners and we look forward to building a national champion businesses the sector together," he stated.

The deal came days after he met with the US ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, in Kisumu, where the two leaders committed to supporting development issues, health, agriculture, and water, among others, through USAID-funded projects in the County.

They both agreed to explore partnerships in economic and security issues that underpin a strong bilateral relationship.

She visited the area after US Embassy in Nairobi released an advisory warning its citizens against travelling to Kisumu due to fear of attacks after the announcement of results and during the Supreme Court presidential petition determination.
