When embattled Lawyer Miguna Miguna touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) early morning on Thursday, October 20, a debate of its on, weighing on who owes him an apology and who doesn't, ensued.

Among the individuals caught in the internet's crosshairs was President William Ruto's Transport Cabinet Secretary nominee Kipchumba Murkomen.

In 2018, shortly after forcefully swearing in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the people's President, Miguna was roughed up and deported to Canada.

With the resurfaced clip, Kenyans claimed that Murkomen and other leaders who were allied to the then Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta and his then deputy William Ruto defended the decision as a justified move.

In the clip, Murkomen, who was the Senator of Elgeyo Marakwet at the time, appeared to defend Uhuru Kenyatta arguing that the move was necessary to save the lives of 45 million people.

"You people are forgetting the bigger issue. Uhuru Kenyatta has a greater responsibility of ensuring that the rule of law is maintained in this country.

"The bigger picture is to keep the country going. If there is a conflict between small issues of one individual, when an individual is a threat to the rights of 45 million people, you cannot subject one individual's rights to threaten those of more people," he told KTN News' Sophia Wanuna.

Kenyans were quick to point out Murkomen's double standards following his recent defense of the lawyer's right to return in Kenya. He had been in exile for four years and eight months.

After Ruto's relationship with Uhuru hit rock bottom, leaders allied to the then deputy President took  different stance against Miguna.

In 2020, Murkomen fiercely defended Miguna's return arguing that it painted a bad picture on the handshake entered into by Uhuru and Raila.

"There is a time CS Kipchumba Murkomen termed Miguna Miguna as a threat to the country, justified his deportation," observed Abuga Makori.

Miguna's return also rattled the opposition with Azimio la Umoja's former Running mate Martha Karua challenging Ruto to offer an apology to Miguna.

Karua told the BBC that Ruto needed to own up for the role he played in the lawyer's chaotic deportation in 2018.

"What happened was a great mistake and atrocity by the government of Kenya of which the current president was a happy Deputy (president).

"It is an action that he cannot dissociate himself with. In fact today, I would expect that he would have apologised to Miguna on his behalf and on behalf of the president who has just retired," Karua noted.
