Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ was on Tuesday, October 25, elected to chair the Senate Public Accounts Committee (PAC) tasked with overseeing the usage of resources by the county governments.

Kajwang, according to the Senate, will be deputized by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei.

Other members include Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nominated Senator Omar Marim Sheikh and Tharaka Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya.

Kajwang' was the only candidate fronted for the position of the committee's chair. This will be his third term as the committee's chairperson in his three terms as Homa Bay Senator.

Speaking after his election, Kajwang' noted that he would collaborate with all members in ensuring that the committee succeeds in its mandate.

“I have sat on this chair before and I am looking forward to a very good relationship. I want to commit that we will continue on the same trajectory, it should not be business as usual, we have no intention of making governors love us, it should not be about the governors but about the people,” Kajwang's stated.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi was also elected as the chairperson of the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee to be deputised by Kisumu Senator Prof Tom Ojienda.

The two committees are normally a preserve of the opposition both in the National Assembly and the Senate.

Members of the committees examine county financial records to ensure transparency in the utility of public resources in line with the function of oversight bestowed on the house.

The committees have powers similar to those of the High Court of summoning county officials and any person of interest for questioning on matters concerning the use of public resources.

The two committees initially functioned as the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee  (CPAIC) before the split into the two entities.
