Ruto’s Message to UK PM Rishi Sunak Who Has Kenyan Roots

President William Ruto on Tuesday, October 25, sent a congratulatory message to the newly-elected Britain Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. 

According to a statement from State House, President  Ruto expressed his hope for stronger ties between the United Kingdom and Kenya. 

He further implored the new premier to leverage on the strong ties to ensure mutual benefit for the people in both countries.

"In a statement on Tuesday, President Ruto noted that Kenya looked forward to continuing “this historic partnership and to using emerging opportunities for the mutual benefit of our people”.

The President said Kenya was proud of the achievements made over decades of collaboration between the two nations," read a statement from State House. 

Sunak's father Yashvir Sunak, was born in Kenya during the colonial era while his mother was born in the neighbouring country of Tanzania. 

His parents moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s and settled in Southampton where Sunak was born. 

Sunak was elected as the leader of the conservative party on Monday, October 24, and subsequently elevated to the position of Prime minister.

He took over from the immediate former Prime Minister Liz Truss who resigned after only 44 days in office. 

Prior to his election as the Prime Minister, Sunak had served as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and a member of the House of Commons where he was first elected in 2015.

Sunak is also a renowned scholar having attained a first-class honours Degree in Philosophy Politics and Economics. 

On Monday, a section of Kenyans also took to social media to send congratulatory messages to Sunak and acknowledge his Kenyan roots.

King Charles III received Sunak at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, October 25 before being appointed Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.
