The Amani National Congress (ANC) party has named Lamu Governor Issa Timamy as the new party Leader.
This follows the resignation of Musalia Mudavadi who was appointed as the Prime Cabinet Secretary by President William Ruto.
In a statement shared by the party on Thursday, October 27, Timamy was appointed by the ANC Council Bureau as the leader albeit in an acting capacity.
“H.E Musalia Mudavadi relinquished his position as ANC Party Leader following his nomination as the Prime CS," the statement read in part.
“The ANC Party wishes H.E Mudavadi God's blessing in his service as Prime Cabinet Secretary and heartily welcomes Gov. Issa Timamy into his new role as Party Leader."
The statement came a day after parliament approved the names forwarded by President Ruto for vetting.
Mudavadi's resignation is in line with article 77 (2) of the constitution which restrains any appointed State officer from holding office in a political party.
The constitution also prohibits a state officer from holding any other form of employment.
"A full-time State officer shall not participate in any other gainful employment," reads article 77 of the constitution.
Mudavadi has been at the helm of the ANC since its formation in 2015. He led the party in two elections, with the first being in 2017 when it was a signatory party of the now moribund National Super Alliance.
During the campaigns preceding the August 2022 election, Mudavadi joined hands with President Ruto and ANC became an affiliate party of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi who was appointed as the country's next Attorney General also quit his position as Democratic Party (DP) leader.
Elected and nominated leaders including senators and members of the National Assembly also relinquished their positions. Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen tendered his resignation to the Speaker of the Senate on Wednesday, October 26.
Other leaders who resigned in compliance with the constitutional requirement include former nominated senator Soipan Tuya, Aden Duale of Garissa Township and Alice Wahome of Kandara.
