Hotels are usually given a start ranking which ranges from 1 to 5. The ranking system helps in several factors like; pricing, determining the quality of amenities available and size.

1 is a hotel's lowest ranking, while 5 is the highest. The rankings are not permanent and can change depending on the hotel's operations.

For example, a fancy 5-star hotel in Mombasa can plummet to 1 star if it offers poor services or reduces the quality of amenities and luxury.

The star ranking is a universally agreed system for describing the quality of hotels

A 1-star hotel is a hospitality business that offers basic necessities.

In Kenya, most 1star hotels are referred to as lodgings as they offer a bed and shower. They are mostly preferred by people in transit or clients who need a short-term stay, usually less than a day.

A 2-star hotel is what is commonly referred to as a guest house. Unlike in a 1-star facility, you can get; a bed, breakfast and hot shower.

A 3-star hotel is an upgrade of a guest house. In addition to bed and breakfast, you might enjoy cable television and a bar.

A 4-star hotel looks at enhancing the experience of customers as it gives you more than a home experience, from social amenities such as a swimming pool, gym and gaming rooms.

A 5-star hotel is the ultimate ranking in the hospitality industry, usually the most expensive.

The hotel does not only offer all needed amenities but also customizes them for every client.

In such hotels, clients are offered customized dinner options and luxury from diet to spa and preferred music.

Other services include tours, transport booking services and other needs a client might request.

Potential guests look at the rating system before booking a hotel. Thus a higher star rating attracts more clients.

The ranking is usually an average as determined by visitors, and that is why sometimes a hotel can have two different star rankings.

For example, one client may decide to give a hotel a 4-star rating, and another one may give it 3 stars. It is rare to find a hotel with two rating systems since it is calculated on average.
