According to reports, Chege was involved in the fatal crash, after he swerved off the road to avoid hitting a boda boda rider who was on the wrong side.

His family and social circle had earlier appealed for blood in an online drive to save the life of their kin who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

"It is very unfortunate that I have lost my husband in a road accident. We have viewed the body at the morgue. We shall communicate on what follows later," Chege's wife has told the Nation.

Condolence messages were shared on various social sites, with many remembering the youthful leader as a charming and ambitious man.

Jubilee Party also mourned the politician. "Rest in peace Steve Chege," read a message on its Twitter account.

"Shocking news. Rest easy Steve. May God comfort your family and friends," Social activist Ndung'u Nyoro wrote on his facebook page.

"Steve Chege, Rest In Peace brother. To the family, we are with you. We pray that the Lord guide your paths during the trying times." Kileleshwa MCA, Robert Alai has mourned.

Digital media strategist Pauline Njoroge also mourned Chege, as an inspiration to many, who had left a permanent mark.

"A young, very promising life cut short. I am gutted. Steve, for over 24 hours you fought very hard, like the fighter you always were. There were doctors by your side, also family and friends nearby doing their best to fight with you because you were truly loved and treasured.

"But the Lord saw it best to give you rest from the pain you were in. Go well Steve and shine on your way. You have left a mark among the young political leaders of your generation, your comrades," she stated.

His demise came a day after six people lost their lives at Kamaki's along the busy Eastern bypass after a Prado rammed into a Tuktuk and a matatu.

The family was to issue more communication later.

The young politician ran as an independent candidate after Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga endorsed former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga for the Laikipia Senate seat.
