IEBC had on October 30, announced the official dates of by-elections to fill parliamentary seats in Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies and a senatorial position in Elgeyo Marakwet county.

This followed the resignation of members who were serving in the aforesaid seats after they were appointed to President William Ruto's cabinet.

President William Ruto picked the three for various dockets namely; Murkomen (Transport, Public Works and Housing), Aden Duale (Defence), and Alice Wahome (Water Sanitation and Irrigation).

In their last submissions on the floor of the house, Aden Duale who served as the National Assembly Majority Leader in the 12th Parliament stated: “As I go to the Executive arm of government, I promise to work with members here. If any one of you wants my help, please do not hesitate to visit my office. I will make time for you, you will not wait…unless, of course, you become too frequent and make it difficult for me to do my job.”

Kandara lawmaker Alice Wahome intimated; “Members of Parliament must continue to be supported, and facilitated to be able to execute their mandate. I, therefore, want to acknowledge my colleagues, both in minority and majority,  that this time I have stayed in Parliament, I have enjoyed cordial relationships with most of the members. I look forward to being able to work with them.”

On the floor of the Senate, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator implored senators to support him in his new docket; “I’m standing here with mixed feelings because Senate has been home for 10 years. It is not for me to tell Kenyans whether I left a legacy or not, it is for historians to write about my responsibility in this House,” he said.

The electoral commission set January 5, 2023, as the by-election date for the vacant seats.
