The National Youth Service has promoted private Dickson Loyerer, an officer who was captured wiping the shoes of Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

In a statement dated November 10, NYS indicated that the officer had been promoted to a full corporal.

NYS explained that the decision to promote the officer - who made headlines early in the week- was informed by his act of kindness.

"When Princess Diana said 'Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you' seemed to have had Dickson Loyerer in mind.

'Through his act of kindness to Ababu Namwamba, he has been promoted to CPL," read the statement in part.

Loyerer assumed his new role with his new badge conferred to him at the NYS headquarters, along Thika Superhighway.

Consequently, the Ministry of Sports joined other Kenyans in commending the move by NYS to promote the officer.

"Private Loyerer's act of kindness earns him a promotion," the ministry, who faced widespread condemnation stated.

"Congratulations CPL Loyerer. You deserve it. Good luck in your new position," Ben Kioria echoed.

A corporal is the fourth highest rank under NYS subordinate officers category. It is the rank immediately above a private

Loyerer's promotion came barely a day after he was offered a job at Ababu's office.

Following an uproar that was witnessed early in the week, the newly promoted officer explained that he was not coerced into cleaning the CS shoes adding that was part of his training in school.

"I looked at your shoes and I saw some dirt. I then decided that I must clean your shoes because when our boss has dirt somewhere, we have to correct it.

"The cleaning of shoes is some of the skills we are taught. Additionally, when our bosses have a wardrobe malfunction, we have to correct it," he explained then.
