The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new fuel prices for the period starting November 15 to December 14.
Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene were reduced by Ksh1 to retail at Ksh177.30, Ksh162 and Ksh145.94, respectively, in Nairobi.
Initially, the prices for a litre of Super petrol retailed at Ksh178, Diesel went for Ksh163, and Kerosene was at Ksh146. The new prices would take effect from November 14 at midnight for one month.
The price of Diesel was cross-subsidized with that of Super Petrol while a subsidy of Ksh17.68 a litre was maintained for Kerosene in order to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices.
"Taking into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products and in line with Government policy, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene decrease by Ksh1 per litre," read part of the notice.
In Mombasa, the prices for petrol, Diesel and Kerosene retailed at Ksh174.98, Ksh159.76 and Ksh143.69 respectively.
In Nakuru, the prices for petrol will now go for Ksh176.62, Diesel will retail at Ksh161.83 and Kerosene will go for Ksh145.79.
In Eldoret, the prices for petrol, Diesel and Kerosene retailed at Ksh177.50, Ksh162.72 and Ksh146.67 respectively.
The news comes as EPRA approved new tariffs for oil marketers evacuating fuel from the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) depot in Nairobi.
This saw the oil marketers charged Ksh2,526.6 per cubic metre, up from Ksh2,074.5. Financial experts had opined that the new tariffs would affect prices in the next three years.
"The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority has reviewed and approved the applicable Kenya Pipeline Company’s multi-year pipeline transport tariff for the tariff control period 2022/2023-2024/2025," EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo stated.
Kiptoo added the extra charges would be used to improve KPC's structures.
"The effective date of the above set of tariffs is October 15, 2022, and subsequent adjustments for the next tariff control period will be July 15 of every year," he added.
President William Ruto's administration has been under intense scrutiny from the public to fulfil his promises during the campaign period and cushion them from the high cost of living.
They poked holes in Ruto's campaign narrative where he castigated the previous regime for the high cost of fuel prices and promised to cushion Kenyans from the ravaging effects.
