Kenya is among 93 countries that voted at the United Nations General Assembly, to condemn Russia for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The motion was tabled to condemn Russia as well as order the Vladmir Putin-led government to repatriate Ukraine for the losses incurred during the war.
The resolution was rejected by 14 country and a staggering 74 countries abstained, making it one of the motions to pass with low turnout in UN history.
Top countries that supported the motion include US, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Japan and Italy.
Notable countries that rejected the motion include; Russia itself, China, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Ethiopia, Mali and Zimbabwe.
President William Ruto’s administration seems to agree with his predecessor’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Under former president Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya became one of the first countries in the world to condemn Russia for invading Ukraine.
"Kenya is gravely concerned by the announcement made by the Russian Federation to recognize Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine as independent states.
In our considered view, this action and announcement breach the territorial integrity of Ukraine," Kenya’s ambassador at the U.N. Security Council Martin Kimani remarked at the start of the conflict on February 22.
On March 2, Kenya was among member nations that voted calling for Russia to observe immediate ceasefire and withdraw all its troops from Ukraine.
Although Ruto castigated the former administration for piling the country’s economic woes on Russia, he has since changed tune and echoed Uhuru’s sentiments.
“We are all bearing the effects of what that Russia-Ukraine conflict potents for us. High food prices, we cannot pay for and access fertilizers," Ruto remarked on his interview with Al Jazeera on September 24.
