East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP-elect, Kanini Kega on Monday, November 28, revealed intricate details of how the Mt Kenya region was betrayed in a State House meeting involving Kenya Kwanza legislators.
Speaking on Inooro TV, Kega affirmed that Kenya Kwanza coalition MPs had convened to select five nominees to EALA.
The Mt. Kenya politicians, led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, had struck a deal with other regions to back each other's nominees during the voting process, according to the former Kieni lawmaker.
Kenya Kwanza politicians from Central Kenya handpicked former MP Iringo Kubai and Maina Karobia.
However, much to their dismay, United Republican Party Secretary-General Fredrick Muteti and former Nominated Senator Falhada Dekow were selected in their place.
"When they (Kenya Kwanza) went to do their nominations at State House, they chose five people. Fortunately, out of the five, no one was from the Mt Kenya region.
"The way this system works is that people support you so that you can in return vote for people in their region. Those within Mt Kenya wanted Iringo and Karobia.
"The Mt Kenya people voted for (Nandi Woman Representative) Zipporah Kering and (Nominated Senator) David Sankok and expected the favour to be returned. However, Muteti and Falhada were selected in their place. So when the list was issued, there was no name in Mt Kenya," Kega intimated.
The former Kieni legislator noted that the Mt.Kenya politicians felt betrayed since the agreement wasn't acted upon. Following the act of betrayal, a resurgence within the region was experienced as they resorted to speak in one voice.
"Unfortunately, for the Mt Kenya people, it was a gentleman's agreement and not a binding document.
"At this period, I presume the Mt Kenya MPs decided to teach them a lesson and stand united, speaking in one voice regardless of the party. This was led by DP Gachagua," he pointed out.
In addition, Kega questioned the essence of the dynasty conversation which formed most of the campaign narratives heading to the August 9 election.
Alluding to this, he claimed that the Kenya Kwanza MPs were instructed to vote for Azimio's Winnie Odinga (ODM) and Kennedy Kalonzo (Wiper)- hence the reason why both candidates received a larger share of the votes.
Kega also credited Kenya Kwanza for standing with him during the voting process- poking holes in Orange Democratic Movement's allegiance in the process.
"You would expect the whole of Azimio la Umoja coalition to back me up as their candidate 100 percent, but the majority did including Wiper, DAP, and Jubilee was a bit divisive because of the other candidates.
"Where we thought we'd get the most support but did not was ODM. This was due to the differences we had. This is what caused the people from Mt Kenya to unite. If I was to rely on Azimio solely, I wouldn't have made it," he pointed out.
