The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a motor vehicle auction exercise to be carried out in Kilindini, Mombasa County on Thursday, December 15.
In a notice released on Tuesday, December 13, that authority announced that it was auctioning 548 vehicles alongside other items considered surplus and unserviceable.
Interested buyers were asked to visit the warehouse between Tuesday, December 13, and Wednesday, December 14.
Kenyans can also view the gazette notice to see additional details like ship name and date, date of arrival, container/chassis marks and number.
“Unless vehicles are entered and removed from the Customs Warehouse within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice they will be sold by public auction on December 15, 2022,” KRA announced in the notice dated Sunday, December 11.
Some of the vehicles that will be auctioned include; Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Lexus, Nissan Note, Mazda, Toyota Vitz, Mercedes Benz C and BMW X5.
Some of the vehicles being auctioned are second-hand while others are new.
Aside from vehicles, other items that will be auctioned include four hot rolled coil, assorted steel spring and 27 pieces of U Channel, pieces of wire rods, assorted candy and assorted personal effects.
KRA is allowed to auction vehicles under provisions of section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004.
The act states, “Where any goods which have been deposited in a Customs warehouse are not lawfully removed within thirty days after deposit,”
“Then the Commissioner shall give notice by publication in the Gazette that unless such goods are removed within thirty days from the date of notice they shall be deemed to have been abandoned to Customs for sale by public auction and may be sold in such manner as the Commissioner may deem fit.”
The act further dictates that if the goods are of perishable nature or are animals, then they may be sold without any notice either by public auction or by private treaty.
How to bid
Interested buyers must physically avail themselves at KRA's custom warehouse located in Kilindini, Mombasa.
They will then be handed a document with the prices of the vehicles and assorted items. To obtain a bidding number, one must pay a refundable deposit based on the vehicle model in form of a banker's cheque.
The highest bidder will walk away with the item of their choice.
