Baby Sagini's grandmother accused her daughter-in-law of causing harm to the three-year-old in a statement to the police on Thursday, December 22.

In her statement to detectives based in Kisii, the grandmother alleged that her daughter-in-law and Sagini's cousin allegedly conspired to have the three-year-old killed.

At the centre of the incident was a tussle for a parcel of ancestral land that Baby Sagini was to inherit.

In her statement, she indicated that the two main suspects were determined to cause harm to the baby as they did not want the three-year-old boy to inherit family land since he was a stepson in the family.

The grandmother detailed that the duo hatched the plan and were determined on eliminating the baby despite being warned against it.

The revelation from Sagini's grandmother came just hours after her arrest on Thursday.

According to the police, the three-year-old's aunt carried him in a genie bag to the maize plantation and was later joined by her son.

The police further suspected that the gouging of the eyes took place at the maize plantation even as they intensified their investigations into the incident.

The police, however, did not make the statements that were given by the suspects public nor did they indicate whether the grandmother would be turned into a state witness.

Meanwhile, the trio, who were presented in Court on December 22,  were directed to take their plea on Friday, December 23 since Baby Sagini lacked legal representation.

Prosecutor Hilary Kaino told the court that his office would prefer charges against the two in the event all teams were present in court.

Baby Sagini, his mother and his sister, on the other hand, were placed under protective custody in an undisclosed location in Nairobi county.
