Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to cancel the recruitment exercise.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, December 24, at Kendu Bay in Homabay, KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori called on TSC CEO Nancy Macharia to revoke the advertisement that declared 30,000 slots vacant.
He argued that the Commission should have prioritised promoting long-serving before hiring new entrants.
“Going by what we can see in the advertisement is a lot of disappointment to the extent that there is a lot of anxiety,” he stated.
Misori sent a direct message to TSC asking for clarification on why the category of grades C3 to C4 had not been slotted for the promotion in the advertisement.
“TSC seems to be very proud that they have advertised about 14,000 chances. Going by the stagnation of teachers, this is a drop in the ocean,” KUPPET stated.
The union further stated that the move was leading to the demotivation of diploma teachers calling on the government to consider the stagnation among teachers first.
“If the government believes in teachers according to what the President and his deputy state, let the parliament of Kenya allocate money so that teachers who have stagnated to be promoted,” the union uttered.
KUPPET called on Macharia to review or make another advertisement for the promotion of secondary school teachers who had served in the same position for a long time.
“From the advert, we can read that this commission is just promoting from a need-to-need basis whereby they don't have principals and deputies to run schools. That is why they are fixing positions,” he emphasized.
According to a notice shared on Friday, December 9, the aim of the teachers' recruitment was to fill the shortage of teachers experienced across the country.
"TSC invites applications from qualified candidates to fill the vacancies to support the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)," read part of the notice.
Some of the vacancies advertised included 9,000 posts on permanent and pensionable terms of service for secondary school teachers and 1,000 posts on permanent and pensionable terms of service for primary school teachers.
