Demonstrations rocked Khwisero, Kakamega county on Monday, January 9, after an able-bodied person was appointed to represent People Living with Disabilities (PWDs).

The demonstrations saw PWDs drawn from 21 groups and representing 6,000 others oppose the constituency’s choice to represent them in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Board.

According to the enraged demonstrators, they were shortchanged in the appointment process.

“The employment of an able-bodied person to represent us was made in bad faith and violates the Constitution.

“We are giving a 14-day notice for the appointment to be rescinded or else we will be moving to court,” the group made a statement through one of their members, Gabriel Shitindo.

The group further detailed intrigues that culminated with them being shortchanged.

“Last year, we were given a very small window to present a candidate for the position.

“Despite that, we made our recommendation within the stipulated time and subsequent shortlisting and interviews took place,” the group explained.

It was a shock for them to see someone whom they had not recommended get appointed to the position.

The CDF office management refuted claims that they had gone against the law while making the appointments.

‘The person whom they claim is not disabled is visibly and medically disabled.

“He showed up for the interview with all required paperwork and emerged top after the interviewing process," CDF office manager Nicholas Likoye was quoted by The Standard.

The appointed person who is a retired teacher was allegedly involved in an accident in 2021 that left him with seven broken ribs.
