Social media was awash on Tuesday, January 10, after photos circulated online of Sebastian Groth, German ambassador to Kenya, purchasing a sofa set at a local shop along Ngong road, Nairobi County.
The ambassador endeared Kenyans on social after posting the photos with a Swahili caption titled; Asante kwa kazi nzuri sana! Looks nice - si ndio? And soon nitakula samaki along Ngong Road (Thank you for a job well done! Looks nice, doesn't it? And soon I will be eating fish along Ngong Road).
Bernard Wambua Chule, owner of Unique B Furniture, detailed to Kenyans.co.ke how the deal came to be and what prompted the German ambassador to be amazed by his furniture.
"He was passing by on December 29, 2022, and was appealed by the furniture from afar. He approached us and made an order for the grey 7-seater sofa set.
"The ambassador gave us a week and a half to be done with the design," he noted.
Chule affirmed that by Tuesday, January 10, they were done with the sofa set- to which the German ambassador promptly picked up.
The business owner noted that the 7-seater sofa set retails at an average Ksh65,000 to Ksh70,000, and the cost ramps up to Ksh75,000 if one accounts for delivery fees within Nairobi.
According to Chule, customers who sought for their furniture to be delivered outside Nairobi, would have to make the necessary arrangements and account for the transport charges.
While highlighting the impact of the photos posted by the ambassador, the businessman noted that potential customers had reached out to him in a bid to know more about various furniture pieces.
"People have reached out and some have promised to order. We're still waiting," Chule noted.
Groth, who is an economist and sociologist by training, was appointed as the German ambassador to Kenya on August 5, 2022.
He was also accredited as Ambassador to the Seychelles, Somalia and as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
