Subaru Outbacks are synonymous with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) running various underground operations across the country.

In most cases, the detectives drive the Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) by swapping number plates or using old ones to conceal their identity during crackdowns. The car's prominence has even earned it a nickname in the country, 'Subaru ya Mambaru.'

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Friday, January 13, Miller Kyallo, a Nairobi car expert, stated that detectives prefer Subaru Outback because of its versatility, comfort and driving experience.

"Subaru Outback is a versatile SUV which can perform well both on rough terrain and on well-maintained roads. Its acceleration, body shape and reliability gives it an edge over the others," Miller told Kenyans.co.ke.

According to Miller, Subaru outbacks are built on the foundation of the Subaru Legacy and its Impreza counterpart. Just like other Subaru models, the Outback operates under the tagline 'Confidence in Motion.'

Miller, who also doubles up as a car enthusiast, maintained that Subaru Outback's ground clearance gives it an edge over the others, enabling detectives to access remote areas and flush out wanted assailants.

"The car is preferred due to its ground clearance. Its ground clearance - 8.7 inches – is also one of its major selling points, allowing you to drive to the roughest terrains in the country," Miller added.

Its body shape also makes the car stand out during operations. Subaru Outbacks have a kerb weight of almost 1,600 kilogrammes which helps the car accelerate from 0-100 kilometres per hour in about nine seconds, depending on the model.

According to Car Advice Kenya, an online platform advising Kenyans on various car features, DCI detectives prefer the car due to its practicality and space.

"DCI prefer Subaru Outback as it has enough space which allows them to carry more than four passengers during an operation. all the seats are adjustable, making it even more ideal for undercover operations," Car Advice Kenya stated.

The car is a four-wheel drive helping it to manoeuvre in almost all terrains.

Besides their versatility, the vehicle from Tokyo-based automaker, Subaru, is fitted with up-to-date technology.

The Outback technology is impressive, aiding the driver in various circumstances. For instance, the adaptive cruise control system maintains a reasonable distance from other motorists in front without overreacting to slowing vehicles.

Modern Outbacks have a lane-keeping assistant feature that gently helps drivers stay centred in their lane while cruising.

According to Miller, the sharp sport button on Subaru Outback is more efficient, increasing its reliability and ability to accelerate faster.

Other advanced features in Outbacks include voice controls, a standard 7-inch screen and climate controls.

A brand new 2021 edition of Subaru Outback in Kenya costs north of Ksh9 million. Most 2015 editions range between Ksh3 million to Ksh4 million.

However, most DCI units lease cars from various dealers in the country for a certain period of time.
