According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Northern Bypass is the most unsafe road in the country.

NTSA data compiled between January 1 and December 31, 2022, ranked Kangundo Road second, followed by Mombasa Road.

According to NTSA's statement dated Thursday, January 19, the three roads accounted for the highest road accidents

Nairobi recorded 499 fatalities out of the 1104 lives lost in 2022 due to road accidents. Out of the 273 accident black spots, more than 70 were listed in Nairobi.

The study compiled by the road agency placed Northern Bypass as the country's most unsafe road overtaking Outering Road.

"Nairobi County recorded the highest number of fatalities countrywide in 2022 with a total of 499 deaths. This is a slight reduction from the previous year which had 521 fatalities," the report read in part.

Northern Bypass starts from Ruaka on Limuru Road, overpasses Banana Road through Runda and Thome estates, then proceeds to Kahawa West and finally to Ruiru, through Kamae, where it joins the Eastern Bypass

Besides Northern Bypass, other dangerous roads within Nairobi named in the report include the Haile Selassie-Railway roundabout and Riverside Drive junction.

Others were the Landhies-Kamukunji roundabout on Landhies Road, the JKIA Airport turnoff, St Teresa junction in Eastleigh, the Burma footbridge on Jogoo Road and Blue Post Bridge on Thika Super Highway.

From the study, motorcycle users topped the list of those who had lost their lives due to road accidents. Between January 1 and December 31, 2022, 1209 lost their lives, increasing the number by 55 from data compiled in 2021.

In terms of counties, Nairobi was ranked first, followed by Kiambu, which recorded 484 deaths in 2022 compared to 460 in 2021. Nakuru followed with 389 cases, Machakos 264 , Murang'a 190, Meru 161 and Uasin Gushu 148.

Wajir and Mandera recorded the lowest fatalities, followed by Isiolo and Marsabit.

To help reduce cases of road accidents, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen instructed NTSA to work with other road agencies to increase surveillance on different highways.

Murkomen added that the government had begun a process to adopt a strategy that entails public awareness and enforcement.

"The Authority is already engaging PSV Saccos on the well-being of drivers and ensuring they are sensitised on their role in preventing road carnage," Murkomen stated.
