The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on Friday, January 20, announced the launch of a licensing programme for all electrical workers.
EPRA stated that the workers, energy auditors, and solar photovoltaic technicians licensing had to go through the programme to acquire the necessary licensing to operate.
The workers will be subjected to assessment examinations and competency tests.
The Authority announced that the assessment would be available for interested persons across the country from January 2023 to June 2023.
It further explained that the assessment was meant to filter out unqualified technicians and ensure the safety of Kenyans.
“In order to enhance service delivery, EPRA has devolved the licensing interviews for electrical workers.
"The assessments are a competency test to boost professionalism and make sure that only qualified technicians carry out installation works and ensure safety standards are adhered to,” EPRA stated.
The Authority directed interested individuals to apply for the assessment through their website during the allocated period.
It further indicated the dates and listed Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Nyeri as the counties where the assessments will take place.
In its efforts to ensure the safety of Kenyans, on Thursday, January 19, EPRA introduced six new requirements for heavy-duty drivers transporting petroleum products including demanding that oil marketing companies ensure that drivers of oil tankers are equipped with skills to avert loss of lives and property.
"To reduce petroleum tanker accidents, fleet owners should take their drivers through proper training before deploying them onto open roads," the Authority stated in a notice.
This notice followed the findings of a report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) which indicated a surge in oil and gas tanker-related fatalities on Kenyan roads.
