Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru made a passionate appeal to President William Ruto on behalf of the county’s clergymen regarding the marriage process.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service at Kerugoya Stadium, Kirinyaga County, on Sunday, January 22, Waiguru passed a message to Ruto that she had been sent to plead with him by the men of God to make the marriage process less tedious.
Waiguru who is also the chair of Council of Governors, noted that the process of marriage in church was too long compared to other unions.
“The process of registering Christian marriages is very lengthy for older people who want to go through the process of being married in church. The process is more tedious than other marriages, we request you to look into that issue,” she pleaded.
In a close rejoinder, President Ruto promised to make the process simpler and easier.
The CoG chair also urged Ruto to intervene in the process that the clergymen are supposed to follow when filing annual returns on behalf of the churches.
Insisting that they are law-abiding citizens, she made it clear that they have always been willing to follow the law but would wish to make the process friendly.
“For them to file annual returns, they have to travel to Nairobi. If possible, let us have a desk at Kerugoya Huduma Centre so that they can do it here,” she requested.
Ruto, in his response, stated that he was in the process of digitizing every government service.
"I will make the situation better, they will be filing their returns using their phones in the comfort of their homes," he noted.
Ruto's response came after he defended his government's plan to tighten the country's tax collection programme.
"Every citizen will pay their part of the tax. Big fish now have got to escape route. Can't be that commoners pay tax and the super-rich evade taxation by corrupt means. Kenya is not an animal farm," Ruto stated.
They also asked for support in their mission work as they spread the Gospel to other parts of the country.
“Support them with missions tent to use as they visit other other counties to reduce the cost of preaching the Gospel and I am sure you will also be fulfilling your own mission.
The head of state assured them of his support.
"Waiguru, you will pick them, so that the spread of the word of God can be conducted efficiently," he uttered.
During the thanksgiving service, Ruto dismissed the planned Kamukunji rally announced by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
