Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu moved to tame teachers and reduce the cost of practical lessons under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

In implementation guidelines issued by the State Department for Basic Education on Tuesday, January 24, Machogu defined expenses that teachers and parents would meet.

The CS instructed all learning to be conducted in schools and discouraged far-away trips for practicals.

"Learning will be conducted in the classroom except where learning involves activities that require learners to visit local sites such as construction sites, businesses, industries and the local community to acquire the skills," the statement read.

School administrators were directed to use the most affordable resources, such as manila papers, drawing papers, and other assistive devices.

The Ministry divided the subject into strands and listed the respective resources required. Under safety, first aid kits, print materials and online resources would be provided by teachers.

"This necessitates creativity to improvise the resources or scan the environment to get them. Content can be implemented without incurring any cost," read the comment on the material stand section.

Parents were asked to make the resources available for tools and drawings requiring drawing papers, geometrical sets, and household goods.

Schools and caregivers will ensure that all materials are available to learners during their energy resources lessons.

Machogu further broke down the functions of the laboratory, which is a must-have for all junior secondary schools.

The labs would be used for practical lessons in scientific investigations, a mixture of elements and compounds, living things and their environment, force, and energy.

In the document, teachers were charged with the mandate to ensure the safety of learners during science lessons.
