The sudden death of the former Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha overwhelmed his family, which was coming to terms with the death of his younger brother, Richard Alex Nyabera Magoha.
Ex-CS Magoha died at Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday, January 24, after a cardiac arrest. The astute academician passed on despite numerous attempts to resuscitate him.
He passed on hours before the body of his younger brother, Alex, landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, ahead of the planned burial on Saturday, January 28.
According to preliminary reports, Magoha was among the family members making the burial arrangements for his brother, who died in the US.
He, however, did not get a chance to pay his last respects to his brother.
"Cortege will leave Agha Khan Funeral Home Kisumu, on Saturday, January 28, for a memorial requiem mass at Township Primary School Yala at 10:00 am followed by intermittent at his Umiru home in Yala, Gem, Sub-County," Alex's obituary read in part.
The cause of Alex's death in the US was not immediately publicised. Alex is survived by his wife, Janet Achieng Magoha, and three children; Crystal Magoha, Ashley Magoha and Bernard Magoha.
"Magoha, Alex Richard Nyabera 68 was a loving, caring, devoted husband and father. He was very involved in the lives of his children and family," an obituary published by Bedford Memorial Funeral Home on December 6, added.
"He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Janet Magoha, and children, Crystal, Ashley and Benny Magoha," it added.
Following the double loss, the family is yet to issue a comprehensive statement on whether Alex's burial will go on as slated on Saturday, January 28 or whether the two brothers will be buried together.
In the space of two years, the family has lost three brothers. In August 2021, the family buried Charles Agunga Magoha, who died in Sweden.
Magoha, who passed away on Tuesday, January 24, is survived by his wife Barbara Magoha and son Michael Magoha.
