Since the release of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results, cases of top performers who are unable to join high school due to various reasons emerged.
One such cases was Kevin Kiprono. The boy who scored 375 marks in the national test, got a reason to smile after Kericho County Governor Eric Mutai came across a viral video detailing his plight.
Mutai heard about the boy’s situation during an official trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo and made a decision to sponsor him upon returning.
“The dreams of Kevin Kiprono to proceed to high school without a hitch have come true after I took over the school fees burden. After flying back to the county, I met Kiprono and his guardian,” he announced.
He noted that Kiprono would become one of the beneficiaries of his sponsorship program.
Relating Kiprono’s case to his own life, the county boss explained how he also was raised in a struggling life and had high hopes that the boy’s life could also change in the future.
“For the next four years, the brilliant Kiprono who is set to join Litein High school will be one of the beneficiaries of My Equalizer Sponsorship.
I believe Kiprono will someday emerge an academic giant and turn around his family fortunes and become an asset for Kericho and the whole country,” he noted.
In the viral video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Kiprono cried out to well-wishers for supporting him as he wanted to change the life of his family. He detailed how he had been brought up in a humble background.
“I was brought up by my grandmother. My mother left while I was still a small child and I have never heard of her return till today," he emotionally narrated.
Mutai named The Equalizer sponsorship program after his nickname 'Equilizer' which he used to brand himself as the leader who would bridge the gap between the have and have-nots in the county.
The program has been sponsoring needy children by paying their school fees and upkeep.
This came after Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja also came to the aid of a boy who won his heart during a public event.
Sakaja announced that he would sponsor the boy for his entire secondary school and university education.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, admission of form one students will run from February 6 to February 13, 2023.
On the other hand, Grade 7 students will report to their respective Junior Secondary Schools starting January 30, 2023, after the government announced a raft of guidelines.
