A fresh twist has emerged in the case of the kidnap of an Egerton University student after a police statement contradicted an earlier report by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the victim was rescued on the Eastern Bypass near an eatery establishment.
The statement further revealed that officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (Crib) headquarters, and detectives of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) from Nakuru and Ruiru intercepted a red Mazda Demio vehicle at 8 pm on Monday, January 30 at night, according to a report by Nation.
This contradicted the DCI statement a day earlier where they disclosed that the victim was rescued at an Airbnb apartment in Ruiru.
It also implicated the victim's female friend who is alleged to have conspired with her boyfriend and others to kidnap the victim and demand ransom from her family.
The victim, in her statement, disclosed that she was invited for a late lunch by her best friend's boyfriend on the day of the kidnapping in what turned out to be a well-orchestrated plan between the group of four.
She would be caught unawares along the way after they were joined by two men who informed her that they had kidnapped her and demanded a Ksh600,000 ransom from her family.
The suspects then booked a two-bedroom Airbnb in Ruiru to make merry after receiving Ksh 50,000.
It was the distressed calls from the victim's family that enabled the detectives to trace the four suspects.
Upon further investigations, it was established that the four suspects operated between Thika, Murang’a, Kajiado and Ruiru towns.
The police also discovered that the main suspect and the boyfriend of the victim had been involved in a series of criminal activities before their arrest.
During arrests, cello tape, a rope, mobile phones, SIM cards and identity cards were recovered from the suspects.
