The ongoing countrywide tour of prisons by the Police and Prison Reforms Task Force has exposed the sorry state of some of the prisons in the country.
On Thursday, February 9, task force members were shocked to find a police officer sleeping on the floor without a mattress for a month.
Allegedly, the officer was transferred from Turkana to a prison in Narok but was not accorded accommodation.
"Before leaving, task force member Madam Roseline Odede gifted him a mattress," the task force informed.
To reform the state of the prisons in Kenya, the task force also visited Kwale Women's Prison, where they discovered poor sanitation areas and an ageing traditional mud hut.
From Nandi County, the task force discovered the sorry condition of the accommodation and sanitation facilities.
At the Hindi Police Station in Lamu County, the task force was met with dilapidated accommodation areas, with worn-out mattresses and buildings with rusting iron sheets.
Recently, former Chief Justice David Maraga was puzzled by how Shimo la Tewa was operational despite missing title deeds and other documentation.
Maraga was appointed as the National Police and Prisons Reforms Taskforce chair by President William Ruto.
He was tasked with overseeing the welfare reforms within the National Police Service (NPS) and identifying the legal, policy, administrative, institutional, and operational constraints on effective service delivery by NPS and the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS).
"The term of the task force is a period of 90 days with the effect from the date of this notice," the Thursday, December 22, 2022 notice read.
