President William Ruto on Monday, February 13, paid Ksh1 million rent to settle the rent of a Nakuru-based hawker as part of the government's affordable housing project.

Speaking at Nakuru State Lodge, the president lauded Shinde Shariff for her resolve to make monthly contributions to the Housing Fund project.

The head of state noted that he would boost her project by paying Ksh1 million to enable her to get one step closer to owning the house.

"I will pay Ksh1 million and you continue with the rest so that it will decrease and you can move into the house," Ruto stated much to the applause of the crowd.

While addressing the audience, Sharif noted that the project enabled her to contribute small funds with the hopes of one day owning the house.

She added that her friends have joined her in the initiative and began making small contributions to the project.

" I did not have the capacity but I rushed to purchase one of the houses. At the moment, I have paid for 11 months. I'm still remaining a few months before I own the house. I have brought other people to the project so that they can also own a house.

" I hawk clothes here and there to earn a living so I want to implore you to also start," she stated.

The move was seen as part of realising the government's 200,000 affordable housing units annually for Kenyans. In Nakuru County, the president promised to deliver 50,000 houses to facilitate access to home ownership.

The project was also recently highlighted by Lands CS Zachary Njeru who added that the project aims to contribute to the construction and sustainability of neighborhoods.

“This transformative Plan goes beyond the provision of affordable housing units to presenting opportunities for gainful employment and wealth creation to millions of Kenyans struggling to put food on the table," Ruto stated in December 2022.
