Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu warned parents and teachers against registering grade seven learners to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Speaking on Monday, February 13, during a virtual meeting with Regional Coordinators of education, County Directors of Education, and Subcounty Directors of Education Machogu further made several directives to the stakeholders.

He noted that the ministry of education would not allow learners to sit for exams whose curriculum is different from the Competence Based Curriculum(CBC).

"It will be unfair to the learners," he noted.

Machogu further stated that the officials file reports on the progress of enrollment of grade seven learners, saying they should provide any challenges working against enrollment for the government to address.

"You should work together with the officials of the ministry of interior to ensure that no child remains at home for whatever reason.

I want you to furnish my office with names of schools charging illegal levies on parents. Secondary schools should not charge fees beyond the ones Ministry of education has stipulated," he stated.

The education CS asked the field education officials to make sure that there was a 100 per cent transition of learners from grade six last year to grade seven.

“On fees payment in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), there should be no payment of fees of any kind by parents. The government allocation of Kshs15,000 will meet all requirements of JSS.  The learners should use the desks they would have used in class seven in grade seven,” he uttered.

In attendance was  PS State Department for Basic Education, Belio Kipsang. He noted that County Directors of Education will now register schools. He asked the officers to exercise responsibility with integrity and ensure the learning environment is conducive for children.

This comes after National Assembly Committee on Education convened an urgent meeting to iron out sticky issues surrounding the JSS transition.

Machogu also assured all public schools that the government hired enough teachers who are in the process of reporting to their respective schools.
