A Kenyan lady who was rescued by the Government on January 25 from Albania succumbed to her injuries on Monday, February 13 at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.
In a statement by her mother, she revealed that they hoped to get justice for her departed daughter.
“We have lost my daughter, I only hope that as a family we shall get justice,” she stated.
The lady was airlifted to Kenya after she was assaulted and thrown from a second-floor apartment where she lived in Albania’s Tirana area.
It was alleged that she was in the apartment with five people, four of whom were Albanians.
Her mother travelled to Albania to see her but found her in a coma and in a desperate situation, a state in which she could hardly recognise her.
"I found my daughter in the ICU. She was on the ventilator and covered in a lot of machines. I did not recognise her. She had contractions and was all bandaged up,” the distraught mother explained.
Her situation worried doctors who had attended to her, giving her medication for six weeks but still she neither responded nor woke up.
According to media reports in Albania, civil society activists staged protests and accused the police of not doing enough in their investigations. They demanded justice for the woman.
Upon her arrival in Kenya, she was received at the Wilson Airport by Diaspora Principal Secretary Rose Njogu and Acting Health Director-General Patrick Amoth.
She was then hospitalized and had been in critical condition ever since. She also needed specialized neurological care which was not available in Albania.
Cases of Kenyans facing mistreatment in parts of the Middle East prompted the Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to launch emergency numbers to help affected Kenyans.
Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua revealed that the numbers to ask for assistance were 966 500 755 060 or 19911 (toll-free) and that they were working 24-7.
