The government through the Ministry of Education announced 3,000 job vacancies for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers.

The announcement was made by Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu on Friday 15, 2023, during a meeting with principals and managers of TVET.

Machogu revealed that there was a shortage of trainers in TVET institutions and the government had approved a new recruitment drive.

“The current establishment of trainers in TVET institutions is 6,201 indicating a shortage of 8,817 trainers.

“This means that we are unable to meet the recommended trainer-to-trainee ratio of 1:30 for business courses and 1:20 for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses,” the CS revealed an acute shortage of trainers.

On how to address the shortage, Machogu announced, “I have been engaging with the National Treasury, which has now approved a phased recruitment of 3,000 additional trainers, starting April of this year.”

How to apply

The Education CS announced that the government had already instructed the Public Service Commission (PSC) to start the recruitment exercise.

“I have already sent out a request to the Public Service Commission (PSC) to commence the recruitment process,” he revealed.

Those interested jobs should make an online application through the PSC portal.

To access the application portal, click www(dot)pscims(dot)publicservice(dot)go(dot)ke/jobs/ or www(dot)psckjobs(dot)go(dot)ke.

Machogu further revealed that the Ministry will continue employing TVET trainers on a need basis.

“I have requested the PSC to develop mechanisms to facilitate the recruitment of trainers on a rolling basis as vacancies arise due to attrition,” he announced.

The CS explained that this would help to ensure that trainers are employed on the basis of the existing budget without seeking Treasury's approval.
