Kenyans seeking to own cars and motorcycles will soon be able to acquire them at lower prices after two police stations announced an upcoming mass auction.
One of the stations is the Nairobi Central Police Station which sought to dispose of 70 uncollected vehicles and motorcycles lying in its yard.
In a Gazette notice dated Friday, March 3, the station will auction the vehicles and scrap metal through Astorion Auctioneers.
"Notice is issued pursuant to the provisions of the Disposal of Uncollected Goods Act (Cap. 38) to the owners of motor vehicles, motorcycles, and scrap metal which are lying idle and unclaimed within Central Police Station and Kayole Police Station, to collect the said motor vehicles, motorcycles, and scrap metal at the said yards within thirty (30) days from the date of this publication of this notice," read part of the notice.
The owners of the vehicles were given 30 days from the day the initial notice was published on February 16, 2023.
At Kayole Police Station, the auctioneers will dispose off 16 vehicles and boda bodas, three goats, and one sheep.
Some of the vehicles set to be auctioned are a Toyota Fielder, Isuzu, and Toyota Probox. Also, scrap metal from a Subaru, and Mitsubishi were among the assorted scrap metal to be auctioned.
However, it was not disclosed why the vehicles and motorbikes at the police stations had remained unclaimed.
It is believed, however, that police officers impounded vehicles and motorcycles for flouting traffic rules in some cases as inscribed in the Traffic Act.
On February 24, Embu and Kandara police stations issued a 30-day ultimatum to owners of unclaimed cars and motorbikes else they would be auctioned.
"Failure to claim the vehicles, Mkys Auctioneers shall proceed to dispose of the said properties by a way of public auction on behalf of Embu Police Station if they remain unclaimed," read the notice in parts.
During auctions, Kenyans are urged to be cautious while buying a second-hand car. They are advised to be accompanied by a car expert to check the state of the car.
