Police in Mombasa County arrested two suspects in the broad daylight captured on CCTV robbing an attendant at a mobile money shop on February 26.
The duo was also arraigned before the Mombasa Court on Friday, March 3, where Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Orora ordered that the two be detained for 21 days.
According to the detectives handling the case, the two were behind a spate of robberies in the area and regularly terrorised the locals.
In the video that went viral online, the duo robbed the shop while holding an AK-47 rifle prompting the shop attendant to go on her knees.
Initially, the first thug pretended to be making a cash withdrawal before heading to the counter and demanding the shop attendant give him all the money in the drawer.
The second thug is then seen entering the shop with a bag and pulling out the rifle and pointing it at the shop attendant who was pleading for mercy.
They are then heard demanding money as they ransack the many drawers in the shop looking for more valuables.
Afterward, the men left and told the frightened attendant that they were headed to the next shop in search of money.
"We will leave you with another person to guide you as we go to the next shop," the thugs stated.
The incident came weeks after another incident was captured on CCTV in Mombasa of a man robbing a studio shop.
Similar to the mobile money shop incident, the suspect also pretended to be a customer before attacking the next day while the studio owners were away.
From the CCTV timestamp, the incident occurred between 12:29 pm and 12.34 pm with the stolen goods worth Ksh500,000 in his bag pack.
