Matungulu Member of Parliament Stephen Mule, on Thursday, March 8, questioned Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u over the payment of Ksh360 million in legal fees by the East African Development Bank (EADB).

Speaking in Parliament, Mule indicated that Kenya was among the shareholders under the East African Community treaty and needed to understand how the money was utilised between 2014 and 2020.

The Matungulu lawmaker also sought to understand why Kenyan shareholders had not received their due dividends from the financial institutions serving East African countries.

"The MP asked for reasons why shareholders, particularly Kenya, which is the largest shareholder, have not received any dividends during the current Director-General's tenure," a statement shared by Parliament Kenya read in part.

"Mule asked the Cabinet Secretary to state the measures being taken by the Ministry to safeguard Kenyan taxpayers' money held at the EADB," it further added.

Additionally, the legislator directed Prof Njuguna to explain his strategies to safeguard Kenyan taxpayers' money held by the bank.

The lawmaker also questioned the tenure of the Director General, which he indicated was not clearly defined by the financial institution.

Following the concerns raised by Mule, the National Assembly petitioned Treasury CS Njuguna to appear before Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning.

CS Njuguna is also expected to brief the House on policies adopted by the government to revive the economy.

The CS will also be expected to detail plans by the government to raise money to fund the budget and other stated projects.

Njuguna will issue updates on the status of the country's coffers and pending debts.
